🐾 How We Managed Severe Dog Allergies with Hypoallergenic Cold Pressed Food (Reggie & Dotty’s Story)
When you live with rescue dogs who have complex medical needs, you quickly learn that food is never just “food”.
For us, it became the turning point in everything — from skin health to digestion, comfort, and quality of life.
This is the story of Reggie and Dotty, and how discovering the right nutrition completely changed their lives.
From Overnight Foster to Family Forever
When Reggie first arrived with us in September 2023 as an overnight foster, we never imagined he would still be here permanently.
Through no fault of his own, Reggie stayed for three weeks… and then he simply never left.
Like many rescue dogs, Reggie came with hidden health struggles. One of the first major concerns was severe swelling and irritation, which led us straight to our trusted vets. The diagnosis was heart breaking — severe skin allergies.
Our vet even warned us not to keep him, explaining that dogs with chronic allergies can become extremely expensive due to ongoing vet bills, food trials, allergy management, and specialist care.
But for us, giving up on him was never an option.
Reggie’s Early Allergy Struggles
At the time, Reggie was being fed a raw diet, but it quickly became clear that raw feeding was not suiting him at all.
He suffered from loose stools, painful skin flare-ups, severe scarring on his undercarriage, and constant digestive upset. Watching him struggle daily was devastating.
Anyone who has cared for a dog with allergies understands how emotionally and financially draining it can be. Between repeated vet visits, expensive allergy testing, changing foods, supplements, and constant worry, it can feel overwhelming.
Discovering Hypoallergenic Cold Pressed Dog Food
Fortunately, during this difficult period, we began speaking with the wonderful owners of Salubrious Cold Pressed Dog Food.
At that time, they offered only two recipes, but their lamb grain-free and chicken-free formula became absolutely life-changing for Reggie.
This holistic, hypoallergenic food proved to be exactly what his body needed.
Since switching Reggie to Salubrious lamb recipe, everything changed. His skin flare-ups stopped, his stools became firm and healthy, his digestion improved dramatically, and for the first time, he was truly comfortable.
We also introduced JR Pure toppers and wellbeing support, which complemented his diet beautifully.
Honestly, we have never looked back.
Dotty’s Story: Another Merle Facing Severe Allergies
In September 2025, we were contacted by Moorland Vets regarding a stray dog in desperate need.
Dotty arrived in heart breaking condition. She was emaciated, suffering from rectal prolapse, covered in fleas, and struggling with severe skin allergies. The infestation was so extreme that fleas were reportedly jumping off her onto the veterinary staff.
Like Reggie, Dotty is also a merle, and unfortunately allergies are often common in merle dogs.
Her recovery was extensive and required us to first focus on stabilising her urgent medical needs before fully addressing her allergies.
Dotty’s Recovery and Allergy Management
Once Dotty’s immediate health crisis was under control, we carefully began working on her allergy symptoms and IBD management.
Dotty now thrives on Salubrious lamb cold pressed food, alongside carefully selected Cold Pressed 80/20 Raw Alternative such as duck and beef.
We also found that novel proteins have been incredibly beneficial for her digestion, allergies, and inflammatory bowel disease.
Unusual proteins such as duck, ostrich, kangaroo, venison, and wild boar have all played an important role in improving her condition through the JR Pure range.
These unusual proteins can often be highly effective for dogs with severe sensitivities because they are less likely to trigger allergic reactions.
Skin and Coat Support That Made a Difference
Both Reggie and Dotty now benefit from targeted skin and immune support through AniForte skin and hair supplements, alongside our carefully formulated Anti-Itch Salmon Oil blend.
This blend combines Scottish Salmon Oil, MSM, Echinacea Root, and Nettle Extract, providing daily support for dogs struggling with itching, dry skin, inflammation, and overall coat health.
Together, these ingredients help soothe sensitive skin, support a healthier coat, and promote natural immune function and wellbeing.
For dogs dealing with seasonal allergies, chronic irritation, or inflammatory skin conditions, consistent nutritional support can make a real difference over time.
Alongside this, we also offer a range of chicken-free and grain-free hypoallergenic treats, carefully selected for dogs with allergies and sensitive digestion.
Why Nutrition Is So Important for Dogs with Allergies
Our journey has shown us that proper nutrition can completely transform the life of an allergy-prone dog.
For both Reggie and Dotty, the biggest improvements came from removing common allergens, focusing on grain-free and chicken-free feeding, introducing novel proteins, and supporting skin health from the inside out.
Managing severe allergies is rarely simple, and it often involves significant expense, trial and error, and emotional resilience.
But seeing dogs who were once deeply uncomfortable finally thriving makes every step worthwhile.
Why We Only Sell What We Trust for Our Own Rescue Dogs
At Maisey Daisey, we only sell products we trust enough to give our own rescue dogs. With five rescue dogs, all with complex medical needs ranging from severe skin allergies to bone and joint conditions, nutrition is something we take incredibly seriously. Every one of our dogs is fed Salubrious Cold Pressed food, JR Pure Topper & Wellbeing and the transformation has been remarkable. From improved skin health to better mobility, this food has been a true game changer for our family. With built-in green lipped mussel and joint-supporting herbs, we’ve even been able to stop paying for separate joint supplements like Yumove — because the support is already in their daily nutrition.
Final Thoughts
If your dog is suffering from chronic itching, digestive issues, food intolerances, IBD, or repeated skin flare-ups, there is hope.
Finding the right food and support system can genuinely change their life.
For us, the true game changers have been hypoallergenic cold pressed food, novel proteins, skin-supportive supplements, and the patience to keep searching for what worked.
Sometimes, the dog you were warned not to keep becomes the one who proves just how powerful the right care can be.
